Teaching & Residency
I bring together a performing practice and a scholarly framework that universities, festivals, and cultural institutions can engage in multiple ways, as a guest artist, a visiting scholar, or a residency artist in sustained collaboration with students and faculty. I have taught at Northwestern University, UC Berkeley, Colorado College, Carleton College, UC Riverside, and Macalester College, where I served as Visiting Assistant Professor in Theater.
What I Offer
Technique & Masterclass
Muscle/Bone
A movement technique inspired by Min Tanaka's Body Weather practice. Prepares the body through sustained attention, grounding, and physical listening. Available as a single masterclass or as a multi-day workshop sequence.
Somatic Improvisation
Structured improvisation practice working with peripheral vision, attentional emergence, and collective form. Suitable for undergraduate and graduate movers across dance, theater, and performance studies.
Masterclasses
Focused sessions in Muscle/Bone or somatic improvisation, tailored to the level and context of the host institution. Available as standalone workshops for dance departments, theater programs, or interdisciplinary arts courses.
Lecture-Performance & Guest Lecture
Performance as Ceremony (lecture-performance)
My signature lecture-performance introduces the framework at the center of his practice: an approach to choreography as living ceremony, drawing from Yaqui cosmology, Limón lineage, and Body Weather training. Suitable for performance studies, dance theory, indigenous studies, and interdisciplinary arts courses.
Guest Lectures
Available on the following topics:
- Indigenous performance theory and embodied archives
- The Limón legacy and decolonial reconstruction practice
- Yaqui cosmology and choreographic form
- The adopted Native body as encoded archive
- Performance as Ceremony as methodology
University Residency
A residency with me typically combines technique teaching, studio work with student performers, a public lecture or lecture-performance, and where time allows, a mentorship component for student choreographers and researchers. Residency lengths are flexible; a standard residency runs three to five days.
I hold a Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre (UC San Diego / UC Irvine), an M.F.A. in Dance Theatre (UC San Diego), and a B.F.A. in Dance (UC Santa Barbara). I am the online editor of Theater Journal and serves on the council of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA). My residency work is appropriate for graduate and undergraduate students in dance, theater, performance studies, and Indigenous studies programs.
Festival & Cultural Institution Residency
I am available for residencies with performing arts festivals, cultural centers, and indigenous arts organizations. Residency formats can include open rehearsals, community workshops, artist talks, and in-process showings of new work. Recent residencies include the Indigenous Performing Arts Residency at the UC Berkeley Arts Research Center (April 2026) and an Indigenous Fellowship at the Heller Center, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (October 2026).
